The Horton Chapel, Haven Way, Epsom, Surrey KT19 8NP
The Horton hospitals comprised a group of 5 psychiatric hospitals built between 1899 and 1924. The chapel is the only original publicly accessible building remaining within Epsom’s 1000-acre psychiatric hospital site. Opened in 1901 to final closure in 1997, the chapel’s role was to provide solace for people experiencing mental distress, as a place of worship and from 1961 also as a music therapy centre. The Horton Chapel is now an Arts Centre.
The exhibition Hidden Worlds is themed around the experiences of the residents of the hospital and the pioneering psychiatric treatment and research carried out.
